The end of February and the beginning of March is the perfect time to visit the region of Trás-os-Montes to see beautiful white and pink fields of almond-trees, all full of blossoms.
Despite now more and more almond-trees are planted in the region of Alentejo, and that the Algarve is also known for its almond-trees, the most famous are the blossoms of the almond-trees in the region of Trás-os-Montes. In Portuguese they are called “amendoeiras em flor”. During this time the towns of this region have “Festa da Amendoeira em Flor” (Festival of the Almond-Trees in Blossom).
It’s good to keep in mind that some almond-trees blossom earlier while others do it later. From our experience, the fields near Cerejais blossom earlier.
The fields near Mogadouro, near the viewpoint of Penedo Durão (Miradouro de Penedo Durão), and near the castle of Castelo Rodrigo town blossom a bit later.
As far as tales go, the story says a Moor King called Ibn-Almundim wanted to please his Nordic princess, who was sad and longing for the mantles of snow that winter brought to her country. So he ordered that almond trees would be planted throughout his lands and on the day they blossomed, the young princess smiled once more.
